Torres taste
Date: August 23, 2010
Torres winery was founded by Jaime and Miguel Torres in 1870. The first bodega watched over the Villafranca train station (Penedes wine region in Catalunya). The winery has spread wings in Spain and later in Chile and California. Nowadays they own more than 1300 ha wine land, but still they have stayed a real family business. Jean León was born in Santander, Spain in 1928 and his real name was Ceferino Carrión. At the age of 19, with just a small suitcase for luggage, he embarked on a long and arduous journey that would take him to Paris, New York and finally to Hollywood. Years later, fortune would lead him to set up in partnership with James Dean to create a world-unique restaurant: ”La Scala” in Beverly Hills. Known and respected in gastronomic and oenological circles, in 1963 he decided to embark on the adventure of creating the wine that would carry his name, Jean León. The winery is somehow connected to the Torres family, but in the Torres-bodega in Barcelona we could not find out how, due to language problems.

1, Torres Gran Sangre de Toro Reserva 2005

79 points

Dark purple. Dried fruits nose, later tobacco. Soft start with a bit of spiciness and espresso taste. High structure, good balance, a lot of forest fruits. Don't waste time, drink now.

2, Jean Leon Magnolia 2007

81 points

Light red color, and salty meat in the nose. First time almost weak, but it is a cheat: tough texture. All kind of nuts and round acids. Enjoy with southern food.  You can't stop it.

3, Torres Atrium Merlot 2007

82 points

Black in the middles. Big, soft, dark nose, like cherry chocolate. Starting with ripe red fruits, you can chew it. Long, exciting, like a cavalry attack. The long aftertaste is changing all the time, never boring. Black tie.
